The length of adaptive assignments varies.  It is determined largely by:

  • The number of targeted learning objectives
  • How well a student is performing against learning objectives
  • Any pre-requisite learning objectives for which they are remediated

alta calibrates assignment difficulty to ensure fair content distribution for every learning objective. Because alta is personalized to meet learners where they are, some students may be remediated by several prerequisites until they can start to demonstrate mastery. Students are encouraged to contact instructors if struggling to complete assignments.

Before starting an assignment, students are given an estimated range as to how many questions to expect. Once an assignment is started, a progress bar that assesses current level of mastery and other factors that can contribute to assignment length provides an accurate measurement of where a student is in their learning journey, and how far from achieving mastery and assignment completion they are.
