What are Courses and Sections? How are they different from my current courses?

Courses & Sections is alta’s exciting product update for the new semester! With this new architecture, you will be able to create and manage multiple sections under the same course. Content created and added at the course-level will automatically be shared across all its member sections. You will also be able to more tightly integrate alta into your learning management system (LMS) by generating alta sections from the LMS and linking them directly to the LMS.

Your current and past courses will automatically be migrated to this new product architecture, and will be available for use moving forward. See below to understand how your courses will be migrated to the new product architecture.

I have previously conducted courses directly in alta (i.e. no integration with a learning management system). What happens to these courses?

These courses (along with any applicable student data) will continue to exist in your account. You and your students will still be able to access content and data in these courses.

Additionally, we will automatically create copies of all these courses for you in your account. These copies will have the same content as your previously created courses, and can be used in the new product architecture. Moving forward, you can create multiple sections under these courses.

We recommend that you not use the previously created courses moving forward for new semesters.

I have previously conducted alta courses via my LMS. What happens to these courses?

These courses (along with any applicable student data) will continue to exist in your account. You and your students will still be able to access content and data in these courses from the LMS course.

Additionally, we will automatically create copies of all these courses (in the new product architecture) for you in your account. These copies will have the same content as your previous courses, and can be used moving forward in the new product architecture. You can choose to integrate these newly copied courses into your LMS and generate new sections under them.

We recommend that you not use the previously created courses moving forward for new semesters.

I have already created a course for the upcoming semester. Do I need to rebuild the course again?

As long as there are no students registered in your course, the course will automatically be migrated fully into the new architecture and will be available for use moving forward.

If there are students registered in your course, the course will get cloned automatically upon release of the feature. The cloned course can be used moving forward without requiring a rebuild.

If you plan on integrating alta into your LMS, we recommend doing so after the new product architecture has been released and made available to you. If you have already integrated your Fall alta course into the LMS, please reach out to your Knewton representative and we will help you seamlessly upgrade your account to the new architecture.

Great! When will I get access to this?

We will begin rolling out Courses & Sections to all users starting the week of July 23rd. If you have questions or would prefer a more definitive timeframe, please reach out to your Knewton representative.

I have some other questions. What should I do?

Please reach out to your Knewton representative if you have any questions that haven’t already been covered here.
