A student is labeled as “struggling” on an assignment when they demonstrate that they don’t know a certain learning objective. In other words, if the student has answered sufficient questions on that learning objective for alta to feel confident that they won’t get the next question right, they will be “struggling.”

A few things to keep in mind:

Struggling is a common state! The majority of students are likely marked as struggling at least once in their alta journey. Around tough assignments, it’s not outrageous for most students to be labeled as struggling at the same time.

Struggling is also a temporary state. The majority of struggling students proceed to success without instructor intervention due to alta’s forced instruction, prerequisite support, and extra practice. This being said, sometimes it is most helpful for instructors to offer additional materials, tutoring, or further practice if need be.
